about

During his last summer before starting his first full-time job, Enrique Rosell found himself at a liminal point. While exploring Chicago and New York City with newly found friends, he could feel the markings of the end of childhood. With friends getting ready to go back home, his parents and sisters getting busier and older, and the impending shift to a 9-to-5 job, the future didn’t seem interested in his passions. His last week in New York City was a final grasp at the youthful feelings you just can’t get back. On the last night before returning home, a friend offered to give the group stick-n-poke tattoos as a token of the time they shared; the ink they carried with them acting as a symbolic string holding onto one another and to the innocence that age sheds away. “Stick n Poke” is a reflection on growing up, reminiscing on the things you will inevitably lose in the process, and hoping you can be proud of who you become.

lyrics

I wonder what it feels like
Mark me deep tonight
Make me bleed tonight

Write it in my life
I’ll hold it until I die
This feels like something I can’t tell you why

Running out of room
My heart’s not built for two
You’re taller and there’s nothing I can do
(Nothing I can do)

Mark me with a shape that feels like home
Down by the river I’m whole

Would you be proud of the man I am now?
My heart feels so different somehow.
(My heart feels so different somehow)

A couple years away from home
I miss my dog
I’m buried too
Right next to you.

This dotted line outlines the moon
I’m looking up
Right back to you
It’s always you

Mark me with a shape that feels like home
Down by the river I’m whole

Would you be proud of the man I am now?
My heart feels so different somehow.

Simple shape in blue will let me keep you
I don’t care how much it hurts.

Moments leave so fast
My hands are frayed
Bleeding till I’m home someday.
